🔍 What We Do During a Smog Check

A clear, customer-friendly explanation of the process.

Your technician performs a precise series of tests to confirm your vehicle meets California emissions standards. This includes:

  1. Visual Inspection
We verify all emissions components are present, intact, and functioning properly — including EVAP parts, catalytic converters, and sensors.
  2. On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) Test
For 1996+ vehicles, we connect to your vehicle’s computer to review:
    • Emissions-related trouble codes
    • Readiness monitors
    • Sensor data
This test is highly accurate and usually quick.
  3. Tailpipe Emissions Test (if required)
For 1995 and older vehicles, we measure actual exhaust emissions using a dynamometer.
  4. Functional Tests
Depending on vehicle year, this may include:
    • EVAP system testing
    • Timing checks (on older models)
    • Gas cap integrity
  5. Certificate Submission
Once your vehicle passes, we electronically transmit your certificate to the DMV the same day.

❓ Smog Check FAQs

Do I need an appointment?

Yes — scheduling ensures predictable timing and helps us manage testing requirements, especially for older vehicles.
We are open Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, and the last smog check of the day is at 2:30 PM.
Most days, we can take same-day or next-day appointments, but we always recommend scheduling ahead, especially if your registration is coming due.

Can I work from your waiting area during the test?

We don’t have a waiting area, but we are surrounded by several great cafés and coffee shops where many customers choose to work or relax during their appointment.
Most 2000 and newer smog checks are completed in 45 minutes to 1 hour, making it easy to stay close by.

What happens if my vehicle fails?

If your car does not pass, you’ll receive a clear report explaining exactly why.
If you prefer, we can perform the diagnostic testing and repairs needed to address the issue — but you are never pressured or obligated.
You’re always in complete control.

Do you test hybrid vehicles?

Yes — hybrids still require smog certification in California, and we test them regularly.

Does resetting my check-engine light help me pass?

No. Clearing your check-engine light resets your readiness monitors, which can lead to an automatic failure during the smog test.
If your light is on, we recommend scheduling a diagnostic inspection before your smog appointment so we can identify the root cause.

Do you send my certificate to the DMV?

Yes — we submit your certificate electronically and automatically to the California DMV.
However, it is the vehicle owner’s responsibility to complete registration and submit payment to the DMV on time.
For questions about fees, penalties, or timelines, please contact the California DMV directly.
